Tafelsig United Aids Project
Profile:
Sub-Saharan Africa has just over 10% of the world's population, but is home to more than 60% of all people living with HIV — some 25.4 million. South Africa has the highest number of people living with HIV in the world. According to UNAIDS, an estimated 5.3 million people were living with HIV end-2003 in South Africa, with 2.9 million of them being women.
With poverty being one of the key role players in the spread of the HIV virus, Mustadafin Foundation saw the need to climb on-board and provide support in impoverished areas that have been hard-hit by the disease. As a result The Foundation in 1999 initiated the Tafelsig United Aids Project (TUAP) in Mitchells Plain.
TUAP is one of the premier’s non-government organizations working to combat the spread of HIV/Aids in Mitchells Plain District. Recently, due to the increase of premature AIDS related deaths and the extent of the link between poverty and HIV/AIDS, TUAP changed its strategy to focus on preventative measures to combat both HIV/AIDS and poverty.
TAUP forms part of Multi Sect oral Action Team (MSAT) which comprised of Provincial and Local Stakeholders directly responsible for the control of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in their respective communities. The District MSAT maintains active close relationship with TUAP.
The board members (executives), Director, Staff and Volunteers are active in efforts towards the elimination of Poverty and HIV/AIDS pandemic. TUAP is committed to al leadership role in the fight against a HIV/AIDS and poverty and is active in local program planning and implementation.
